Westchester County approved a $151,500 increase to the engineering contract for the Pondfield Road West Bridge over the Bronx River, advancing the project toward construction bidding.
The county's Board of Acquisition and Contract authorized the spending on Aug. 27, as part of a second amendment to a 2017 agreement with LiRo Engineers, Inc. of Syosset. The contract's total now stands at $729,246.89, according to the county meeting agenda.
The additional funds cover preparation of construction contract documents, cost estimates, required addenda and a bid analysis evaluating contractor proposals. That work represents the final design phase before the county can advertise for construction bids.
$11 million secured earlier this year
The bridge spans the Bronx River at the Bronxville-Yonkers border and dates to 1911. County Legislator James Nolan, a District 15 Republican and the sole GOP member on the 17-member Board of Legislators, told the Bronxville Board of Trustees in March that the county had locked in $11 million for the project.
Nolan said he was pleased to report that he had "secured funding for the replacement of the Pondfield Road West Bridge, allocated at $11 million," according to the village's April 2026 newsletter summarizing the March 9 meeting.
The county's resolution describes the work as a "rehabilitation," while Nolan's earlier statement called it a full "replacement." The difference may reflect distinct project phases, but the county Department of Public Works & Transportation has not clarified the scope publicly.
What it means for residents
Pondfield Road West is a key crossing connecting Bronxville to Yonkers. The 115-year-old bridge's rehabilitation or replacement will eventually require construction work in the corridor, though no construction start date or detour plan has been announced.
The engineering contract, Agreement No. 17-905, was first signed in 2017. Thursday's action was the second amendment. No timeline for advertising construction bids appears in the county's public records.
