Sonia Citron is headed to Berlin to represent the United States at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
USA Basketball announced on Monday, Aug. 31, that Citron, an Eastchester product who plays guard for the Washington Mystics, and teammate Kiki Iriafen have been added to the 12-player roster.
They replace A'ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, both two-time World Cup gold medalists ruled out for health reasons.
The call-up marks Citron's senior national team debut. She attended the Women's National Team Training Camp at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, in December 2025 but missed the World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico earlier in 2026 because of an injury, according to ESPN.
Citron, a second-year guard drafted third overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft, has put together a strong 2026 season.
She is averaging 16.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and 87.2 percent from the free-throw line, USA Today reported.
She's a two-time All-Star.
Before turning pro, Citron played at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle and then at Notre Dame, where she left as the only player in program history with 1,700 points, 700 rebounds and 300 assists.
Sue Bird, managing director of the USA Basketball Women's National Team, said the roster was built around balance. "I wanted to have a mixture of people with experience, a good mixture of people with youth," Bird said, according to USA Today.
Citron joins a squad that includes Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Paige Bueckers. Team USA has won four consecutive FIBA Women's World Cups.
Group play opens Friday, Sept. 4, against China, followed by Italy on Sunday, Sept. 6, and Czechia on Monday, Sept. 7.
The championship game is set for Sunday, Sept. 13. The WNBA resumes Sept. 17 after the tournament break.
