Scarsdale Village is on track to regain a grocery store this fall, ending a nearly two-year gap that left residents without a market in the village center.
DeCicco & Sons' Piccolino Market, a chef-driven Italian spot called Capretta and a Sprouts Farmers Market in nearby Hartsdale are all under construction and targeting openings this fall, according to Scarsdale10583.com, which visited the sites on Aug. 12.
Piccolino Market: 58 East Parkway
The village has been without a grocery store since DeCicco Family Markets, a separate branch of the DeCicco family, closed its 31-year-old location in November 2024. Now DeCicco & Sons is filling that gap with Piccolino, a smaller-format "concept store" at the same 58 East Parkway address.
The name means "little one" in Italian, a nod to the store's compact footprint, Lohud reported in February. The store will carry gourmet groceries, Italian baked goods, fresh produce, prepared foods, a wide beer selection and humanely raised meats free of antibiotics or added hormones.
DeCicco & Sons, run by brothers John and Joe DeCicco Sr. and their sons Chris, Joe Jr. and John Jr., operates more than 11 Westchester locations including stores in Ardsley, Eastchester, Larchmont and Pelham. Piccolino is the first to carry a different name.
Construction crews had exterior windows installed and were working on the interior as of Aug. 12. No firm opening date has been announced, though the store was originally expected to open this past summer.
The build incorporates eco-friendly materials including Pozzotive, a concrete made with recycled glass, plus reclaimed brick and wood and a system that recycles refrigeration heat to power hot water and in-store heating.
Capretta: 57 Spencer Place
Z Hospitality Group, the company behind Aurora in Rye and Terra and Mediterraneo in Greenwich, Conn., is building out Capretta at 57 Spencer Place, the former home of Japanese restaurant Akai.
The restaurant is billed as a chef-driven modern Italian concept. A colorful tile floor was visible during construction Aug. 12.
Sprouts Farmers Market: 393 N. Central Park Ave., Hartsdale
The biggest confirmed date on the calendar belongs to Sprouts Farmers Market, which plans to open Friday, Sept. 4, at 393 N. Central Park Ave. in Hartsdale, just south of the Scarsdale border. The store will occupy the former BEST Market space.
It will be Sprouts' first Westchester location and its second in New York State, after the chain opened in Centereach on Long Island in January. The Phoenix-based company operates more than 450 stores in 24 states.
The chain sources produce in partnership with local and regional farmers and stocks fresh meats, fish, dairy and prepared meals. Signature draws include $5 Sushi Wednesdays and more than 7,000 vitamins and supplements.
Sprouts' Sept. 4 opening is the only confirmed date among the three businesses. Residents can watch for announcements from DeCicco & Sons and Z Hospitality Group on Piccolino and Capretta timelines.
