Sarah Lawrence College's Child Development Institute (CDI) holds its annual conference on childhood education Saturday, Nov. 7, in Bronxville, with 7 Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours available for teachers.
The conference, titled "Centering Children's Experiences: Contemporary Childhood, Wellbeing, and Education," runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college's campus at 1 Mead Way. Check-in and coffee begin at 8:30 a.m., and a buffet lunch is included with registration, according to the conference's Eventbrite page.
The event is open to teachers, clinicians, parents and anyone who works with children. Sarah Lawrence is an approved CTLE sponsor, so New York State licensed teachers can log required professional development hours at the conference.
The day's schedule opens with a framing conversation at 9 a.m., followed by two rounds of small-group workshop sessions, a midday panel called "Perspectives from the Classroom" and a closing discussion with CDI staff at 3:15 p.m.
Sessions listed include "The Essential Value of Play in an Increasingly Non-Playful World," "Wandering Through the Concrete Jungle: Integrating Nature-Based Learning in the Preschool Classroom in New York City," "The Art and Science of Self-Regulation: How to Support this Capacity in Ourselves and in Our Children," "The Case for Play Travels: What Kenyan Teachers Can Teach Us About Early Childhood Today" and "The Right to Play: Disability, Inclusion, and Belonging in Childhood."
New York City public school teachers are eligible for scholarship funds through a grant from the Sprague Foundation. The CDI is also offering limited scholarships to other attendees. The scholarship application deadline is Friday, Oct. 16.
Registration closes Sunday, Nov. 1. Groups and current Sarah Lawrence students can contact [email protected] about discounted rates.
