Scarsdale's annual Fire Fair returns Saturday, Oct. 17, with live fire demonstrations, hands-on training and a focus on lithium-ion battery safety.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station 3, 56 Crossway, rain or shine, according to the Scarsdale Fire Department.

This year's theme follows the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower." The department said it will share tips on safe charging of e-bikes, scooters, power tools and other devices with lithium-ion batteries.

Among the safety messages: use only the cord and charger that came with a device, stop using any device that feels hot or starts to swell, and charge larger items like e-bikes and scooters outside and away from exits.

The fair also features hands-on fire extinguisher training, interactive lessons in a fire safety trailer and live cooking-fire demonstrations showing the dangers of unattended cooking. Certified technicians will check car seats and booster seats.

The American Red Cross will teach hands-only CPR, share emergency preparedness tips and sign residents up for free smoke alarm installations.

For families, the day includes bounce houses, refreshments, antique and modern fire trucks on display, and a firefighter read-aloud.

The event is free.

The Fire Fair comes as Westchester County has stepped up fire safety outreach. The county Department of Emergency Services (DES) launched a public service announcement campaign after what it described as a rise in public inquiries following deadly fires in the county, according to a county press release.

"On Friday night alone, the 60 Control communications center at DES dispatched 17 structural fire events throughout the County," County Executive Ken Jenkins said at an Aug. 10 news briefing announcing the campaign.
