Kyle Gifford, who helped the Scarsdale Raiders win the 1972 state football championship, died Monday, Aug. 24, at age 71 years old in Stamford, Connecticut.

Gifford was the son of Frank Gifford, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and longtime ABC Monday Night Football commentator, and Maxine Gifford.

Described as an award-winning football player at Scarsdale High School, Kyle graduated in 1973 and went on to Colorado College, where he graduated with honors.

The Gifford family's ties to Scarsdale ran deep. Frank Gifford lived on an estate near Winged Foot Golf Club, where he had been a member since 1961, according to a Scarsdale10583 profile of his years in town.

He was a regular in the stands at Raiders football games. Both Kyle and his brother Jeff played football at Scarsdale High School. Their sister Vicki was a cheerleader.

Frank Gifford spent his entire NFL career with the New York Giants from 1952 to 1964 before becoming one of the most recognized voices in sports broadcasting. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. He died in August 2015 at age 84.

In 1979, at age 24, Kyle Gifford was seriously injured in a car accident on the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The vehicle he was riding in ran off the road and struck a tree, The Washington Post reported at the time.

The 1978 Lincoln Continental split into three pieces. Two of Gifford's friends were killed. Gifford sustained head and internal injuries.

Kyle Gifford died peacefully, surrounded by family, according to an obituary notice published in The New York Times. No memorial service had been announced as of Sept. 1.
