The Scarsdale Advisory Council for People with Disabilities will hold a public memorial for Marian Green on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Scarsdale Public Library. Green chaired the council for more than a decade and was a leading disability-rights advocate in the village.

Green, 71, was killed at her Fox Meadow home on July 7. Her son, Chester Green, 27, has been indicted on second-degree murder and criminal weapon-possession charges.

He pleaded not guilty at his Oct. 14 arraignment in Westchester County Court, the Journal News reported. He remains held without bail. The charges are accusations, and he is presumed innocent.

The memorial, announced in a village notice on Scarsdale10583.com, will take place in the Scott Room. Residents are invited to share stories, poems and songs celebrating Green's life.

Attendees are asked to bring a baby, toddler or children's book. The books will be donated in Green's memory to a local underserved population.

Green was a fixture at Village Board meetings, where she pushed for concrete sidewalks, accessible parking and inclusive programming. At the July 14 board meeting, Mayor Justin Arest opened with extended remarks honoring her work and led a moment of silence.

"Her voice helped shape the sidewalks we are rebuilding, contributed to the thinking behind the library's accessibility improvements, and leaves behind a stronger culture of advocacy," Arest said at the July 14 meeting, according to Scarsdale10583.com.

Before chairing the disabilities council, Green led C.H.I.L.D. (Children Having Individual Learning Differences), a Parent Teacher Council committee supporting students with learning differences and their families.

She also helped shape the library's accessibility renovation after reaching out to the library director in 2009, according to Arest's remarks.

Susan Petula, a fellow council member, told the board in July that Green lived to serve the village and described her as passionate, kind, generous and selfless.

The Scott Room and library building are wheelchair accessible. Parking at the library is limited because of ongoing construction, but street parking is available nearby. Light refreshments will be served.

Residents with questions about the memorial can email Susan at [email protected] with the subject line "MARIAN."
