Scarsdale's police department has two new Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a trailer after State Sen. Shelley Mayer secured a $100,000 grant for the village's motorcycle unit.

Mayer joined officers at an unveiling event on Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to the Yonkers Times.

The money came through the Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) Program, a state capital grant program administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

The new bikes replace older models. Police Chief Steven DelBene called the previous motorcycles less safe for officers to ride.

"These funds allowed us to fully outfit two brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which are much safer for our officers to ride than our older models," DelBene said.

"These motorcycles will help us improve highway safety through education and enforcement throughout the Village of Scarsdale."

The motorcycle unit lets officers navigate tight spaces patrol cars cannot reach.

The bikes carry radar equipment for speed enforcement and are also used during parades, street fairs, funeral processions and dignitary escorts.

Mayer said it is crucial that local police departments and officers have the resources to respond to emergencies and keep the community safe. She thanked DelBene and Officer Nick Kringas by name for their work.

Scarsdale Mayor Justin Arest said the equipment will improve the department's mobility. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin also praised the funding.
