Thomas H. Fix Jr. is challenging incumbent Shelley B. Mayer for New York’s 37th Senate District in the Nov. 3 general election.

The state’s amended certification lists Fix on the Republican line only. Mayer appears on the Democratic and Working Families lines.

Background

Fix’s campaign biography describes him as a lifelong Eastchester resident with a business degree from Iona University. He says he was a co-owner of Cornell’s True Value Hardware for more than 30 years.

The biography also describes service on Eastchester’s Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee and a cooperative apartment community’s board. Those descriptions come from his own campaign.

Campaign priorities

On his platform page, Fix proposes fully funding police departments and reversing or reducing changes to cash bail and criminal discovery rules.

For utility costs, he proposes a one-year holiday from taxes and surcharges on bills. He also supports delaying or repealing certain state energy mandates.

His tax proposals include a three-year property-tax freeze, a cap for residents older than 70 and reductions in personal income taxes. These are campaign proposals rather than policies described here as enacted.

On education and development, Fix emphasizes parental involvement in schools and preservation of local zoning authority.
