A Scarsdale man is facing a murder charge after prosecutors say his mother was killed inside their Butler Road home, a case that has shaken the Fox Meadow neighborhood.

Chester Green, 26, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Marian Green, 71, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday, July 8. He was arraigned virtually and ordered held without bail.

Prosecutors allege Green stabbed his mother with a sharp object and struck her with a blunt instrument sometime between Sunday, July 5, and Tuesday, July 7. No motive has been publicly released.

The charges came one day after the Scarsdale Police Department announced officers found a person dead at a Butler Road residence early Tuesday morning. Police initially said the cause and manner of death were under investigation and awaiting review by the Westchester County Medical Examiner.

Marian Green was known in Scarsdale as an advocate for accessibility. She chaired the village’s Advisory Council for People with Disabilities and regularly attended Village Board meetings to push for improvements to sidewalks, pools and other public spaces.

The Scarsdale Police Department said it is continuing the investigation with assistance from the Westchester County Police Forensic Investigations Unit. Officials said there is no indication of a threat to the public.

Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace called the death “horrifying” and said prosecutors would pursue the case.

Green is scheduled to return to court Wednesday, Aug. 5. The case is Scarsdale’s first homicide since the 2016 killing of pediatrician Robin Goldman.
