Bronxville residents looking to help students head back to class with full backpacks can drop off school supplies at the Bronxville Public Library through Wednesday, August 12.

State Senator Shelley Mayer is partnering with United Way of Westchester and Putnam Counties for her annual back-to-school supply drive, now accepting donations at five sites across Senate District 37. The library at 201 Pondfield Road is the closest drop-off point for Bronxville, Scarsdale, and Eastchester families.

The drive is separate from the Sharing Shelf's supply collection at Tuckahoe Public Library, which wraps up Monday, August 10.

United Way President and CEO Tom Gabriel framed the need in stark terms: "Over 43% of our Westchester neighbors are currently struggling to afford basic necessities."

Senator Mayer, who represents District 37 including Bronxville, Yonkers, Mamaroneck, and Pound Ridge, said the start of a new school year brings excitement but also real financial pressure for families who cannot cover supply costs. She thanked the library and the drive's other host sites for stepping up.

What to donate

Organizers are accepting backpacks, spiral notebooks, composition books, two-pocket folders, 12-inch rulers, crayons, #2 pencils, ballpoint pens, safety scissors, highlighters, pencil cases, pink erasers, three-ring binders, pencil sharpeners, and glue sticks.

Where and when to drop off

The Bronxville Public Library is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m.; Thursday from 1 to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is closed Sundays. Other collection sites include Yonkers Will Library, Mamaroneck Town Center, and Pound Ridge Town House.

The drive's August 12 deadline falls roughly two weeks before most Westchester school districts open for the fall semester, according to Yonkers Times.
