Bronxville High School golfer Tom Ruhanen is testing himself against some of the best young players in the region this week at one of junior golf’s biggest tournaments.
Ruhanen, a member of the Class of 2027, is competing in the 109th Met Junior Championship at North Jersey Country Club in Wayne, N.J., after earning a spot as one of the first three members of Team New York, a new development squad created through the Metropolitan Golf Association’s junior program.
Ruhanen joins Graham Erickson of Rye and Josh Yan of Newburgh on the inaugural team.
The selection comes after a breakout stretch for the Bronxville standout. He was named the 2024 Metropolitan PGA Junior Player of the Year in the Boys Future Series division and followed that up with a strong 2025 campaign, winning three MetPGA Junior events.
His biggest victory came at the Tour Championship at Waccabuc Country Club, where he posted rounds of 65 and 70 for a 135 total. He also finished third at the Met Junior PGA Championship at Hampshire Country Club after shooting 73-67.
Founded in 1912, the Met Junior Championship is the nation’s oldest junior golf tournament, according to the Metropolitan Golf Association. Its list of past champions includes future PGA Tour stars and some of the sport’s most respected names, including Cameron Young.
The winner receives the Mandeville Trophy, a prize that will go to a new champion this year after defending champion Jonathan Weinberg did not return to the field.
This year’s tournament is being hosted for the first time by North Jersey Country Club, a historic course founded in 1895. The club became one of the Metropolitan Golf Association’s founding members in 1897, and its Walter Travis-designed course opened in 1923.
The tournament began Monday, July 13, with 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. After a five-player playoff for the final three spots, the field was narrowed to 16 players for match play.
Match play continues Tuesday and Wednesday, with the championship final scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at North Jersey Country Club.
Ruhanen is among several Westchester-area golfers in the field, including Tucker Gongaware, Josh Yan, brothers Joe and Kurt Carey of Yorktown Heights, and past MGA Boys’ champions Minho Chung of Mahopac and Ken Fernandes of Chappaqua.
