Drivers exiting the Lord and Taylor lot onto Wilmot Road in Eastchester can no longer turn right on red during school hours.
The Eastchester Police Department posted a new sign at the intersection restricting right turns on red between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. and between 3 and 4 p.m. on school days.
Superintendent Dr. Alison Villanueva announced the change in a community message Friday, Sept. 11, writing that the department acted after families raised concerns about traffic at the exit.
Villanueva's message credited community feedback for prompting the action but did not detail the specific safety concern.
The source language references "cars, turning left" at the intersection, though the new restriction addresses right turns on red.
"Your feedback allows us to make plans and consider how we can make adjustments within the resources available to us," Villanueva wrote.
The sign follows a broader push to address school-zone traffic since the Eastchester Union Free School District (EUFSD) cut its large yellow bus fleet from 18 buses to six for the 2026–27 school year.
Roughly 295 families filed transportation appeals before the start of school.
New York State provided $2 million in emergency aid to the district, secured by State Sen. Shelley Mayer and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, to help offset budget cuts that drove the fleet reduction.
Parking lot improvements are also underway at school campuses to ease arrival and dismissal congestion.
Town Supervisor Tony Colavita, Eastchester Police Chief Joe Rodriguez and Villanueva addressed traffic concerns at a community forum held Aug. 18 at Mulino's.
The forum covered traffic flow, arrival and dismissal procedures and parking lot improvements across the district's schools.
Villanueva wrote that the Town of Eastchester, the district's facilities department and the police department will continue reviewing suggestions submitted by families.
The district is also accepting applications for crossing guard positions. Applications go to the Eastchester Police Department.
The next Eastchester Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the EMS/EHS Library.
Administrative teams from each school building are set to present updates on the start of the year.
