High school seniors of Irish-American heritage in Bronxville, Scarsdale and Eastchester can apply for a $2,500 college scholarship from the Society of Irish American Lawyers, known as SOCIAL.
The group's annual scholarship is open to college-bound seniors at accredited high schools in the Ninth Judicial District, which covers Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Rockland counties. A $500 runner-up prize is also available. Applications are due Dec. 1, with the winner announced in early 2027.
To qualify, students must be seniors in the 2026–2027 school year or 2026 graduates who deferred college admission for a year. They must be of Irish descent and reside in one of the five counties.
What to submit
The application requires:
- An essay of 250–350 words, typed and double-spaced, on the topic "How your Irish heritage has influenced your life and goals"
- One letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach or employer
- A high school transcript covering grades 9–11, with a three-year average and class rank if available
- A record of awards, extracurricular activities and employment
- A record of community service
- A completed Certification and Acknowledgement form
According to the scholarship page, applicants are evaluated on their essay, leadership and community service, the recommendation letter, academic ability and character.
