Nine Bronxville High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, the Bronxville School district announced Sept. 14.
Sean Ahn, Valentino Angelani, Elizabeth Barnes, Nathaniel Deutsch, William Gaston, Charles Greenfield, Sebastian Jew, Mustafa Khizar and Ava Toolan are among roughly 16,000 high school students nationwide chosen from a pool of more than 1.2 million juniors who took the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or PSAT/NMSQT.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the semifinalist list on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as part of the program's 72nd year, according to the Daily News. That group represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.
The high school's most recent school profile listed a senior class of 118 students. Nine semifinalists from that class is roughly 7.6 percent. Deutsch, one of the nine, also runs on the Bronxville cross country team.
Across the region, Scarsdale High School produced 31 semifinalists this year, while three Eastchester High School seniors also earned the distinction. Eastchester Principal Chris Welsh, announcing his school's honorees on Sept. 11, called the recognition broader than a single test score. "The award is attached to a single test, but it's really a reflection of their overall performance throughout their time in high school," Welsh said.
About 1,000 students from New York State are selected as semifinalists each year.
To advance to finalist standing, each semifinalist must submit a detailed application covering academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and employment.
They must also write an essay and post SAT or ACT scores that confirm their earlier PSAT performance. About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to reach finalist status, and roughly half of those finalists will receive a scholarship.
Three types of awards are available: 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, about 700 corporate-sponsored awards and about 3,500 college-sponsored awards from roughly 140 colleges and universities.
In all, about 6,700 scholarships totaling approximately $24 million will be offered in spring 2027.
Finalists will be notified in February 2027, with winners announced in four rounds between April and July 2027.
