The faster Metro-North commute many Westchester riders have been waiting for is getting pushed back — while the price of the current ride is going up.
Metro-North fares increased this year, with some ticket prices rising as much as 8%. Meanwhile, the long-awaited Penn Station Access project, which would give New Haven Line riders a direct route into Manhattan’s West Side, is now not expected to be finished until at least 2030.
The $2.9 billion project was originally targeted for completion by the end of 2027. The MTA has blamed delays on Amtrak, which controls key tracks and infrastructure needed for construction.
For riders in Bronxville, Scarsdale and Eastchester, the delay means continuing the trip into Grand Central Terminal — and waiting longer for a connection the MTA says could eventually cut some commutes by up to 40 minutes a day.
The MTA says construction has been slowed because Amtrak has not provided enough track access and required safety support. The agencies have since become locked in a public dispute, with Amtrak filing a lawsuit against Metro-North in 2026 over separate rail access issues.
The MTA has proposed opening parts of the project earlier, including several Bronx stations, but even that timeline has reportedly slipped.
The project remains backed by $1.64 billion in federal funding, but officials have not announced a new firm completion date.
