Sarah Lawrence College opens its centennial year with two public events on Sept. 8, at its Bronxville campus.

Constitutional law scholar Melissa Murray will speak at 7 p.m. as the first guest in the college's SLC100 Presidential Event Series. Murray is the Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law at New York University.

She will discuss her new book, "The U.S. Constitution: A Comprehensive and Annotated Guide for the Modern Reader," in a conversation and Q&A with Sarah Lawrence President Cristle Collins Judd. The talk will also be livestreamed.

Murray previously visited the campus in 2022 to discuss the Supreme Court's ruling on Roe v. Wade as part of the college's History Matters series.

The SLC100 series marks the college's 100th anniversary. In an August letter, Judd, now entering her 10th year as president, said she is "excited to bring leading thinkers and voices to Sarah Lawrence for timely conversations that draw on the past, examine the present, and consider what comes next."

Earlier that evening, the Gallery at Heimbold Visual Arts Center hosts the opening reception for "Does This Taste Funny? Humor in Contemporary Art," a group exhibition featuring more than 40 artists. The reception runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

Curated by Melissa Brown and Sarah Lawrence faculty member John O'Connor, the two-venue show is presented in collaboration with Lehman College Art Gallery. It uses humor to challenge how viewers see contemporary art. The exhibition remains on view through Dec. 13.

Judd encouraged visitors to pair the two events. "Come for the art, grab a bite at the Barb, and stay for the conversation with Melissa Murray!" she wrote, referring to the campus dining spot.

Both events are open to the public and listed as free on the Bronxville Patch calendar. They take place at Sarah Lawrence College, 1 Mead Way, Bronxville.
