Scarsdale's Varsity A girls tennis team has surged to 7-1 with five freshmen in the lineup, capped by a 4-3 win over Horace Greeley on Friday, Sept. 25.
The victory avenged a loss to Greeley earlier this season and last October's Section 1 Large School Championship final, which the Quakers won at Harrison High School.
Coach Jennifer Roane, in her 32nd year leading the program according to Scarsdale10583, said the freshmen surprised her at tryouts by dominating the courts. Rather than promoting players from last year's Varsity B and junior varsity squads, Roane placed five first-year players directly onto Varsity A.
The five freshmen are Kylie Ho at third singles, Emma Senda and Ikoi Sano at first doubles, and Addison Roth and Sadie Tauber at second doubles.
Against Greeley, doubles depth proved decisive. Scarsdale won on all four doubles courts to secure the 4-3 result.
A day earlier, on Thursday, Sept. 24, the Raiders topped Byram Hills 5-2 in a non-league match. Ho cruised through third singles 6-0, 6-1. Junior Arabella Succar won a grinding second-singles match 6-4, 7-5.
Roth and Tauber controlled second doubles 6-1, 6-2. Returning juniors Minda Khan and Keila Patel won third doubles 6-3, 7-5, and the fourth-doubles pair of junior Isabella Wu and senior Caroline Wu won 6-2, 7-5.
Sophomore Chloe Jin filled in at first singles for Isabel Lin, the team's usual top player. Jin retired after losing the first set 1-6 and trailing 2-5 in the second against Byram Hills' Katherine Shil. Freshmen Senda and Sano lost a tight first-doubles match in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 6-10.
Scarsdale sits at 7-1 with the bulk of its league schedule still ahead.
