Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Scarsdale raised more than $4,000 for families of fallen New York City first responders at a Blue Mass on Sept. 18.
The service marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and drew police officers, firefighters, parents, parishioners and community members, as first reported by Scarsdale10583.com.
The Rev. Stephen Ries celebrated the Mass, joined by two other priests. The altar was draped in blue, and the priests wore blue vestments to honor first responders.
The funds went to Answer the Call, officially named the N.Y. Police and Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund.
The nonprofit provides financial assistance to families of NYPD officers, FDNY firefighters, Port Authority police officers and EMS workers killed in the line of duty. It does not receive government funding, according to its website.
The school said the initiative gave students a chance to learn about the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and turn remembrance into action through service.
