James Nicholas, the 29-year-old Scarsdale native who won his first Korn Ferry Tour title in February, sits one spot outside the automatic PGA Tour promotion threshold as he recovers from a heel injury that derailed a breakout summer.

Nicholas claimed the Astara Golf Championship in Bogotá, Colombia, with a dramatic finish: trailing Norman Xiong by one stroke with three holes to play, he birdied the 16th and eagled the 18th to win by two at 19 under par. The victory earned him $180,000 and vaulted him to third on the Korn Ferry Tour points list, according to SurpriseSports.

The win also punched his ticket to the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he made the cut and finished tied for 65th, according to his USGA player profile. He then qualified for The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale through Final Qualifying at Burnham and Berrow.

But the summer took a painful turn. Nicholas sustained bone bruises in both heels after jumping from a six-foot wall in flip-flops in Mallorca while locked out of his hotel before an early practice session. He shot a first-round 75 at Royal Birkdale before withdrawing, posting on Instagram on July 18: "Competing in an Open Championship has always been a dream of mine, which makes this especially difficult to accept."

The missed events dropped him from 16th to 21st on the points list, Yahoo Sports reported. The top 20 at season's end earn automatic PGA Tour cards.

"There's no faking it. You've got to earn it," Nicholas said on X in early August. "If you play poorly, you can slide down the rankings pretty quickly."

As of the first week of August, Nicholas had returned to walking nine holes for the first time in four weeks, using gel inserts for extra cushioning.

No specific return date to competition has been announced.

Nicholas grew up in Scarsdale in a family steeped in sports medicine. His grandfather, Dr. James A. Nicholas, founded the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital; both his grandfather and father served as team doctors for the Jets, Knicks, Islanders and Rangers. He graduated from Yale in 2019 with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology after winning five NCAA golf events and earning Ivy League Player of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019. He also played safety on Yale's football team as a freshman and competed in ice hockey until age 18.

Nicholas turned professional in 2019 and won the New York State Open at Bethpage Black. He spent the 2024 season on the DP World Tour before returning to the Korn Ferry Tour, where he finished 63rd on the 2025 money list with $173,507 in tour earnings.

Nicholas needs to climb from 21st to the top 20 in the Korn Ferry Tour's remaining events to secure his PGA Tour card.
