A group of high schoolers designed it, and now Westchester County wants two minutes of your time to help fix how the county talks about recycling. County Executive Ken Jenkins announced a partnership Monday with Environmental Leaders of Color, a Mount Vernon-based youth nonprofit, to gather resident feedback through an anonymous recycling survey built entirely by ELOC's high school students.
The survey covers recycling habits and how familiar residents are with the county's Household Material Recovery Facility in Valhalla. Peter L. McCartt, the county's director of energy conservation and sustainability, said responses will directly shape future outreach and sustainability programs — meaning this isn't just data collection, it's a chance to influence what comes next.
Bronxville, Scarsdale and Eastchester residents can already use the H-MRF at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla at no extra cost. The facility takes household hazardous waste — electronics, paint, automotive fluids — Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., by appointment only. Call (914) 813-5425 to schedule a drop-off.
The survey takes about two minutes and is open now at eloc.earth/westchester-waste-survey, with no closing date announced yet.
