A Mamaroneck Road woman lost $4,000 to a phone scam after a caller claimed the money would resolve her son's legal troubles. Scarsdale police reported the incident in the village's weekly blotter covering Aug. 24–30.
The woman sent the money before realizing the call was fraudulent, according to scarsdale10583.com, which compiled the blotter from official information. She reported the scam on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Two arrests
Scarsdale police made two arrests during the week.
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, officers stopped a driver on Garth Road and arrested Jhon A. Escobar Renao, 37, of Yonkers. He was charged with driving the wrong way on a one-way street, second-degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license. He was released with an appearance ticket.
On Friday, Aug. 28, Ardsley police notified Scarsdale that a woman wanted on a Scarsdale bench warrant had been picked up for a separate offense. Scarsdale officers traveled to Ardsley to take custody of Olga Dimopoulos, 58, also known as Christine Dimopoulos. She was charged with failure to appear in court. She was issued an appearance ticket and released.
Business theft
A Harwood Court business owner reported on Friday, Aug. 28, that a customer from Yonkers had stolen at least 17 items by issuing a bad check.
Fire and safety calls
Scarsdale firefighters responded to several calls during the week:
- On Monday, Aug. 24, crews locked out a malfunctioning elevator at Depot Place near the Scarsdale train station.
- On Tuesday, Aug. 25, particle board behind a stove's stainless steel backing plate ignited at an Autenreith Road home. Firefighters put out the fire and recommended calling a plumber and contractor.
- On Wednesday, Aug. 26, firefighters found workers in a 3-by-6-foot trench at Mamaroneck Road and Palmer Avenue. They advised stopping work until the trench was reinforced with shoring.
- On Thursday, Aug. 27, Scarsdale crews assisted Greenburgh firefighters at a structure fire in Hartsdale.
- On Friday, Aug. 28, a gas odor at a Montgomery Road home turned out to be a contractor who had forgotten to reignite a gas fireplace pilot light. Firefighters stood by for Con Edison.
Other police activity
Police issued summonses to four drivers for registration and licensing violations during the week. One car accident was reported in the village.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, a raccoon hissing at a woman on Butler Road would not move and appeared aggressive. Officers recommended the woman call a trapper.
On Saturday, Aug. 29, construction workers on Aspen Road were working outside allowable hours. They were also playing loud music. Police advised them of village code, and the workers stopped and lowered the volume.
Officers also removed illegally posted signs from Heathcote Road, Penn Boulevard, Vernon Road and Post Road throughout the week.
