Two Westchester swimming facilities are getting a major facelift after receiving more than $831,000 in state grants.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the funding through the state's NY SWIMS program, awarding $310,578 to the New Rochelle YMCA and $520,448 to the McGee Hall Aquatic Center at the Julia Dyckman Andrus Memorial in Yonkers.

For the New Rochelle YMCA, the upgrades go beyond fresh paint. The project will replace aging ladders and diving boards, repaint the pool and install new lighting that will finally allow the facility to host competitive swim meets. The YMCA has become a regional hub after Y branches in Mount Vernon, White Plains and Tarrytown closed.

"We want to make sure that we level the playing field," CEO Jennifer Ryan Safsel told the Journal News.

In Yonkers, the funding will renovate locker rooms, restrooms, showers and the pool deck while adding an ADA-accessible pool lift. The McGee Hall Aquatic Center serves children living on the Andrus campus, students in its special education programs and community swimmers.

The grants are part of nearly $21 million awarded to 16 projects statewide through New York's NY SWIMS initiative. Neither Westchester project has announced a construction start date.
