Bronxville High School's fall play closes with a final performance on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., and the production carries a twist: it is set in the audience's own town.

"Kodachrome," a dramatic comedy by playwright Adam Szymkowicz, follows a small-town photographer as she captures her neighbors' lives and relationships through her camera lens.

The script is originally set in the fictional town of Colchester, Connecticut, but theater director Robert Cross relocated the story to Bronxville, according to the school district's announcement.

That local connection goes beyond the script. Student Diana McEnroe spent hours photographing locations around Bronxville to create the images that the lead character, The Photographer, captures throughout the show.

"Our audience will literally see themselves and the town reflected on stage as our lead character, The Photographer, captures everyday relationships and stories with her camera," Cross said in the announcement.

The play premiered at Portland Center Stage in Portland, Oregon in February 2018, according to publisher Concord Theatricals. It explores love, nostalgia and how people learn to say goodbye, with the photographer guiding the audience through glimpses of romance in various stages.

Cross called the show "enormously challenging" for young actors because most of them are creating characters outside their own lived experiences. The cast of 13 student actors portrays 16 different roles, with another 17 students working behind the scenes.

He singled out two performers. Alexandra Seuffert plays The Photographer and, according to Cross, barely leaves the stage, carrying much of the play's emotional weight. Porter Rao takes on two roles: a grieving hardware store owner and an obsessive perfume maker.

The show runs 85 minutes with no intermission. The Oct. 22-24 run also included performances on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.

Ticket and venue details were not included in the school's announcement. The Bronxville School district website has additional information.
