The right lane of the eastbound Cross County Parkway closed Monday, Oct. 26, for a paving project expected to last through summer 2027.
The closure affects the stretch between Exit 4, the Interstate 87 interchange, and Exit 5 at Kimball Avenue in Yonkers, according to News 12 Westchester, citing the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). A specific completion date has not been announced.
For Bronxville, Scarsdale and Eastchester residents who commute east, the months-long lane reduction squeezes traffic through one of the parkway's busiest segments. The work zone sits near the Cross County Shopping Center.
The Cross County Parkway is the primary east-west highway across lower Westchester County. It connects every major north-south route between the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Hutchinson River Parkway, with the exception of Interstate 95. The parkway is also the only one in New York with both express and local lanes. According to the Wikipedia description of the Exit 4-to-Exit 5 segment, Exit 5 is accessed only by the local lanes, which may help explain why NYSDOT described the closure as a right-lane reduction rather than a full shutdown.
NYSDOT is warning drivers to slow down in the work zone. Speeding fines are doubled. Two or more speeding convictions in a work zone could lead to a license suspension.
The same Exit 4-to-Exit 5 stretch saw a shorter closure over the summer. NYSDOT reduced eastbound traffic to a single lane from the evening of July 20 through July 24 for roadwork, according to Patch. News 12 reported at the time that the department encouraged drivers to seek alternate routes or allow extra travel time. NYSDOT has not named specific detour routes for the current, longer closure.
