Scarsdale High School will run Monday class schedules on four non-Monday dates this year. The first swap falls Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The change addresses uneven curriculum pacing caused by a cluster of early-autumn Monday holiday closures, as first reported by the SHS Maroon. The schedule affects all 1,479 students at the school.

After Oct. 6, the three remaining swap dates are Thursday, Oct. 15, Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2027, and Thursday, April 1, 2027. On each date, students will attend their Monday-period classes instead of the regular Tuesday or Thursday lineup.

The problem surfaced during lunchtime meetings hosted by Principal Kenneth Bonamo. Teachers across departments told Bonamo that repeated Monday closures were throwing off pacing between sections of the same course. In multi-section classes, students whose "drop days" fall on Mondays were getting ahead of peers who lost those periods to holidays.

Assistant Principal Laura Weiss said that when teachers "teach a section on Mondays versus a section on Thursdays, it could cause some unevenness as far as pacing goes and keeping up with [their] curriculum."

Scarsdale's five elementary schools use rotating cycle-day schedules that absorb calendar disruptions automatically. The high school cannot do the same because it dismisses students early on Fridays. Weiss said switching to cycle days at SHS would be "a much larger conversation."

Students offered mixed reactions. Jianing Zhou, a junior, called the plan "a good solution to fix the balance of missing classes" but added that she still wants to keep her Tuesday drop days.

Sabrina Bunnett, also a junior, said the swaps help her catch up with other class sections and feel more prepared for tests.

Bell times will not change on swap days. Individual students' free periods may shift depending on their personal Monday schedules.

After-school sports practices, club meetings and tutoring sessions will follow their normal routines, not the Monday schedule.

The administration plans to email students and parents the day before each swap and announce the changes during Thursday homeroom videos. The next swap after Oct. 6 falls on Thursday, Oct. 15.
